Adam “Tango” Holland has become a familiar face in the Cyprus running scene. After winning the 2018 and 2019 Logicom Cyprus Marathon and securing 2nd place in the challenging 2022 edition, he now has his sights set on making history, becoming the first runner to claim three victories at the Cyprus Marathon.

Only three athletes have managed to win the Logicom Cyprus Marathon twice: Adam Holland, Salameh Al Aqra from Jordan (2005 & 2007), and Raphael Igrisianu from Romania (2013 & 2014). Now, Holland is determined to go one step further.

The 38-year-old from South-West England will arrive in Cyprus just days after his birthday, aiming to add another golden olive wreath to his collection.

Q: You’ve already won the Logicom Cyprus Marathon twice (2018 & 2019). What does returning for another race mean to you?
Adam: It would be absolutely amazing to win it for a third time and become the first person to achieve that. But honestly, coming back to see everyone I’ve built friendships with over the years is just as important to me. The community and atmosphere in Paphos are truly special.

Q: Your personal best in Cyprus is 2:35:03 (2019), just a few minutes off the course record (2:29:31). Do you feel in shape to challenge that record this year?
Adam: I feel in good shape, especially after setting personal bests in all distances last year except the marathon. But as always, it depends on the conditions on race day. I remember one year we had a thunderstorm, which made it quite challenging. If the weather cooperates, I’ll definitely give it my best shot.

Q: What does a typical training week look like for you? How many miles do you run, and what types of sessions do you focus on?
Adam:
I don’t really have a set training routine because I work 40 to 50 hours a week. On weekends, I try to find races to incorporate into my training. I’ve recently retrieved my Noble Pro treadmill back, so I’ll be focusing on speed work leading up to the race.

Q: How do you approach nutrition—both in general and in the days leading up to a race? Do you use any supplements?
Adam: I keep it pretty simple and eat what I enjoy, but I do try to include good sources of protein like chicken, eggs, and sausages. I also love chips and pizza, and I’m definitely not one to shy away from a sweet treat. I don’t follow any strict diet plans, just a balanced approach that works for me.

Q: Recovery is crucial, especially when racing frequently. What’s your post-race recovery routine, particularly when you have back-to-back races?
Adam: My go-to recovery routine is a short, easy run to loosen up my legs, just a couple of miles to get the blood flowing. I find that active recovery helps me bounce back faster for the next race.

Q: You’ve accomplished so much in your running career, including winning over 350 marathons. What has been your proudest achievement so far?

Adam: It’s hard to pick just one. From running 100 marathons by the age of 23, to completing John O’Groats to Lands End, winning various marathons, and reaching my 100th different parkrun venue, I’ve been really fortunate to experience so many memorable moments. Each milestone has its own special place in my heart.

Q: What advice would you give to someone just starting out in running? And what guidance would you offer to those aiming to break the 3-hour mark in the marathon?
Adam: For beginners, my advice is to enjoy the journey and not worry too much about time. Once you’re comfortable, you can start setting goals and gradually chip away at your times.
For those aiming to break 3 hours, break the race into sections with target times for each segment. Personally, I aim for a 1:25 first half so I have a 1:35 cushion for the second half, but that strategy isn’t for everyone, especially if you’re not used to the distance. Most importantly, practice, practice, and more practice!

Q: You’re known not just for your speed but for your incredible endurance and consistency. What keeps you motivated to keep pushing your limits?
Adam: Setting mini-goals, looking forward to upcoming events, and taking on challenges for charity keeps me motivated. I also love sharing my experiences through my YouTube channel to inspire others. The running community is incredibly supportive, and that keeps me going.

We’re thrilled to welcome Adam Holland back to the Logicom Cyprus Marathon! His remarkable journey and passion for running continue to inspire runners around the world. Will he make history with a third win? We can’t wait to find out!
